Suffolk, Virginia, an independent city in Hampton Roads and the largest city in the state by land area, is rich in history, natural beauty, and Southern charm. Its roots go back to 1742, when it was founded as a port town on the Nansemond River. Visitors can explore historic downtown Suffolk, with its elegant architecture and vibrant cultural scene. The city is home to landmarks like Riddick’s Folly House Museum, offering a glimpse into its antebellum past, and the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, showcasing a unique and expansive natural environment. Suffolk seamlessly combines a deep appreciation for its agricultural heritage, as highlighted during the annual Peanut Fest, with modern amenities, including the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts and a range of outdoor recreational opportunities around Lake Prince and Sleepy Hole Park. With its welcoming community and diverse attractions, Suffolk invites both residents and visitors to experience the best of Virginia’s history, culture, and natural wonders.
Suffolk’s historic downtown and wide-open landscapes offer plenty to explore. Here are some of the best places to visit in and around Suffolk:
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge: Covering about 112,000 acres of Suffolk, Chesapeake, and northeastern North Carolina, this refuge has more than 40 miles of trails and boardwalks for hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. At its heart lies Lake Drummond, a 3,100-acre natural lake.
Riddick’s Folly House Museum: Mills Riddick built this Greek Revival mansion on North Main Street in 1837, and Union forces used it as a headquarters during the occupation of Suffolk. Guided tours show its 21 rooms and tell the story of the Riddick family, who lived there until 1967.
Seaboard Station Railroad Museum: Housed in an 1885 Queen Anne–style passenger station in downtown Suffolk, this museum displays railroad memorabilia and a two-room HO-scale model of Suffolk as it looked in 1907. It reopened in June 2026 after flood repairs and renovations.
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts: Set in the former Suffolk High School, which opened in 1922, this downtown arts center hosts plays, concerts, and dance performances, along with gallery exhibits and art classes for adults and children.
Sleepy Hole Park: This North Suffolk park on the Nansemond River has a two-mile nature trail through upland forest, a 30-acre freshwater lake, and a river pier with a fishing platform and a floating kayak launch.
Lake Prince: This 946-acre lake off U.S. 460 is popular with anglers for striped bass, largemouth bass, and black crappie, and a boat ramp gives small boats access to the water.
