Woodlawn, Virginia, is a census-designated place in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County, stretching from Fort Belvoir to Little Hunting Creek along U.S. Route 1, with Huntley Meadows Park on its northern edge. Its southwestern corner is home to Woodlawn, the historic estate that shares the community’s name, and the area is within easy reach of several of Northern Virginia’s best-known colonial landmarks along the Potomac River.
Here are some of the most notable historic sites and parks in and around Woodlawn:
Woodlawn: Built between 1800 and 1805 on land George Washington gave as a wedding gift to Nelly Custis, Martha Washington’s granddaughter, and his nephew Lawrence Lewis, this mansion was designed by William Thornton, architect of the U.S. Capitol. The National Trust runs it as a museum.
Pope-Leighey House: This Usonian home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was completed in 1941 in Falls Church and moved to the Woodlawn grounds in the 1960s to save it from Interstate 66 construction. It is preserved with its original furnishings and open for tours.
Mount Vernon: George Washington’s estate on the Potomac River is a short drive away, with the mansion, the Washington family tomb, gardens, and a museum and education center. The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association has owned and cared for it since the 1850s.
Gunston Hall: Built between 1755 and 1759 on Mason Neck near Lorton, this Georgian mansion was the home of George Mason, author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Its interior woodwork, gardens, and exhibits on 18th-century life are open to visitors.
Pohick Church: Completed in 1774 in nearby Lorton, this Episcopal church counted both George Washington and George Mason among its vestrymen. It still has an active congregation and offers docent-led tours.
Huntley Meadows Park: On Woodlawn’s northern edge, this Fairfax County park combines forests, meadows, and vast wetlands crossed by a boardwalk, making it one of the area’s best spots for wildlife watching.
