Here are some of the top historic sites, parks and landmarks in and around Anacostia:
Frederick Douglass National Historic Site: Cedar Hill, the house on W Street SE where the abolitionist lived for the last 17 years of his life, is preserved by the National Park Service and shown on ranger-led guided tours.
Anacostia Park: This National Park Service park along the Anacostia River has the paved Anacostia River Trail, a covered roller-skating pavilion, basketball and tennis courts, athletic fields and views across the water to the Navy Yard.
Anacostia Community Museum: Opened in 1967 as the first federally funded community museum in the country, this Smithsonian museum at Fort Stanton tells the stories of Washington-area communities through exhibitions and public programs.
The Big Chair: Standing 19½ feet tall at Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and V Street SE, this landmark was first built in 1959 to advertise the Curtis Brothers furniture showroom; an aluminum replica replaced the original mahogany chair in 2006.
