Glover Park, nestled in the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., is a serene residential neighborhood with a distinctive blend of historic charm and modern conveniences. Named after Charles Carroll Glover, the longtime head of Riggs Bank and a philanthropist who championed the creation of Rock Creek Park, the area is characterized by tree-lined streets, porch-front rowhouses from the 1920s and 1930s, and a close-knit community feel. Glover Park’s main natural attraction is the wooded Glover-Archbold Park, created partly from land Glover donated in 1924, which provides residents with a peaceful retreat for outdoor activities and walks. The neighborhood is also home to the Guy Mason Recreation Center, offering a baseball field, a basketball court and a playground for sports and leisure. While primarily residential, Glover Park features restaurants and local businesses along Wisconsin Avenue and a sense of tranquility that sets it apart in the bustling landscape of the nation’s capital.
Glover Park sits between Georgetown and the Washington National Cathedral, with a long wooded park along its western edge. Here are some of the best parks and sights in and around Glover Park:
Glover-Archbold Park: This 183-acre wooded park on the neighborhood’s western edge has a trail of nearly 2.5 miles from Van Ness Street NW to Canal Road NW, linking via Foundry Branch to the C&O Canal towpath.
Guy Mason Recreation Center: A city recreation center and park at 3600 Calvert Street NW with a baseball field, a basketball court, a playground and a dog park.
Holy Rood Cemetery: Founded in 1832 at 2126 Wisconsin Avenue NW and owned by Georgetown University, the hilltop cemetery holds about 7,000 burials, including Civil War veterans and as many as 1,000 free and enslaved African Americans.
Washington National Cathedral: Just north of Glover Park at Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenues, this neo-Gothic Episcopal cathedral was built between 1907 and 1990 and sits on 57 acres of landscaped grounds that include the Bishop’s Garden.
Dumbarton Oaks: A short drive south in Georgetown, Harvard’s historic estate has a museum of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art and terraced gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand.
