Nestled in Northeast Washington, D.C., Ivy City is a neighborhood that has undergone a noteworthy transformation, evolving from its industrial and railroad roots into a lively and eclectic urban enclave. Laid out in 1873 on a small triangle of land between New York Avenue, West Virginia Avenue and Mount Olivet Road, Ivy City is known for its repurposed warehouses and factories. The 1937 Hecht Company Warehouse, a Streamline Moderne landmark with glass-block walls, has been converted into loft apartments at the center of the Hecht Warehouse District. Ivy City Smokehouse offers a taste of the sea with its smoked fish market and tavern on Okie Street. Just beyond the neighborhood’s edges lie the historic Mount Olivet Cemetery and the U.S. National Arboretum. Ivy City, with its dynamic mix of history, food and new development, stands as a testament to the city’s ability to rejuvenate and reimagine its urban landscape.
Ivy City is small, but its converted warehouses and its neighbors to the east make it worth a closer look. Here are some of the best places to visit in and around Ivy City:
Ivy City Smokehouse: A seafood business at 1356 Okie Street NE known for its smoked fish and salmon jerky, with a fish market and the Ivy City Tavern.
Hecht Company Warehouse: Built in 1937 at 1401 New York Avenue NE, this Streamline Moderne landmark with glass-block walls and a star-shaped corner cupola now holds loft apartments in the Hecht Warehouse District.
Mount Olivet Cemetery: Founded in 1858 at 1300 Bladensburg Road NE, the largest Catholic burial ground in the District holds the graves of White House architect James Hoban and Lincoln conspirator Mary Surratt.
U.S. National Arboretum: A short drive east on New York Avenue NE, the arboretum established by Congress in 1927 is home to the National Capitol Columns, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum and large azalea collections.
