Once a streetcar suburb, Petworth has evolved into a dynamic neighborhood boasting tree-lined streets, historic row houses, and a sense of community pride. On its edge stands President Lincoln’s Cottage, where Abraham Lincoln spent the summers and falls of 1862 to 1864 during the Civil War, while Upshur Street offers a lively mix of local restaurants, bars, and shops. The commercial pulse along the Georgia Avenue Corridor adds more restaurants and stores, fostering a bustling urban atmosphere. Residents and visitors can enjoy green spaces like the lawn and spray park at Petworth Recreation Center and the historic grounds of Rock Creek Cemetery. With its local businesses, the seasonal Petworth Community Market at 9th and Upshur Streets, and the historic Petworth Neighborhood Library, Petworth stands as a welcoming and evolving enclave within the nation’s capital.
