Nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C., Shaw stands as a neighborhood steeped in history, resilience, and cultural richness. Once a hub for African American culture during the early 20th century, Shaw has experienced a vibrant revitalization in recent years, blending its historic charm with contemporary developments. The iconic Howard Theatre remains a cultural cornerstone, hosting diverse musical performances. Shaw’s streets, particularly within the Blagden Alley–Naylor Court Historic District, boast a mix of historic row houses, trendy boutiques, and art galleries. Just to the north, the 9:30 Club, a legendary music venue at the eastern end of the U Street Corridor, draws music enthusiasts from far and wide. The neighborhood’s CityMarket at O, built around the historic 1881 O Street Market, offers a modern retail and dining experience. With its skate park, beer gardens like Dacha, and proximity to Logan Circle, Shaw has become a dynamic and sought-after destination, embodying a unique blend of heritage, urban vitality, and cultural diversity.
Shaw blends landmarks of Black history and music with restored alleys, a historic market and plenty of new restaurants. Here are some of the best places to visit in and around Shaw:
Howard Theatre: Opened in 1910 at 620 T Street NW, the theater hosted Duke Ellington, helped launch Ella Fitzgerald through its amateur contests, and has presented live music again since its 2012 restoration.
Blagden Alley–Naylor Court: A historic district of former light-industrial buildings tucked into alleys between 9th, 10th, M and O Streets NW, now home to restaurants, cafés, cocktail bars and murals.
CityMarket at O: A mixed-use complex built around the 1881 O Street Market, one of three 19th-century public market buildings still standing in the city, with a supermarket, a hotel and apartments.
Shaw Skate Park: A city skate park at Rhode Island Avenue and 11th Street NW with half pipes, ramps and rails.
9:30 Club: Just north of Shaw at the eastern end of the U Street Corridor, this 1,200-capacity music club has been at 815 V Street NW since 1996.
African American Civil War Memorial: Ed Hamilton’s bronze Spirit of Freedom statue at Vermont Avenue and U Street NW, surrounded by walls listing the names of U.S. Colored Troops, with its museum nearby on Vermont Avenue.
