Nestled along the scenic Atlantic Ocean, Virginia Beach, Virginia, stands as a premier coastal destination renowned for its expansive sandy beaches, lively boardwalk, and diverse attractions. The iconic three-mile Virginia Beach Boardwalk beckons with oceanfront charm, featuring shops, restaurants, and panoramic views of the Atlantic. The city boasts a rich historical heritage, notably marked by the Cape Henry Lighthouse, completed in 1792 near the spot where English colonists first landed in 1607. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center adds an educational touch with marine exhibits, while the King Neptune statue stands as a symbol of the city’s maritime spirit. With a vibrant cultural scene, family-friendly attractions, and a welcoming atmosphere, Virginia Beach combines natural beauty with modern entertainment, creating an alluring coastal haven on the shores of the Old Dominion.
Virginia Beach pairs a lively oceanfront with parks, museums, and historic sites. Here are some of the top sights in and around the city:
Virginia Beach Boardwalk: This three-mile oceanfront promenade runs from 2nd Street to 40th Street, with hotels, shops, and restaurants on one side and the beach on the other. Near 31st Street stands the 34-foot bronze King Neptune statue, dedicated in 2005.
First Landing State Park: Set at Cape Henry on the Chesapeake Bay, near where English colonists first landed in April 1607, Virginia’s most popular state park has more than 19 miles of trails through cypress swamp and forested dunes, plus a bay beach.
Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center: Spread across North and South buildings on General Booth Boulevard, the aquarium is home to thousands of animals representing hundreds of species.
Cape Henry Lighthouse: Completed in 1792 as the new nation’s first federally funded public works project, the lighthouse stands on Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story near the First Landing site. Because it sits on an active base, visits require advance tickets and a valid ID.
Military Aviation Museum: In rural Pungo, this museum displays more than 50 World War I and World War II aircraft, many restored to flying condition, including a de Havilland Mosquito.
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge: Established in 1938 in the southeastern corner of the city, this refuge protects beach, dunes, marsh, and forest, where more than 300 bird species have been recorded. Visitors come to hike, bike, kayak, and watch wildlife.
