Wolf Trap, a census-designated place in northern Fairfax County between Vienna and Great Falls, is synonymous with Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, the first and only U.S. national park dedicated to the performing arts. This cultural oasis, nestled within a scenic wooded setting, boasts the Filene Center, an outdoor amphitheater, while The Barns at Wolf Trap, a theater built from two restored 18th-century barns, provides an intimate indoor space for performances ranging from concerts to opera. The National Park Service runs the park grounds, and the nonprofit Wolf Trap Foundation presents the performances, bringing top artists to a setting that combines world-class entertainment with the beauty of nature. Beyond the performing arts, the Wolf Trap area is home to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and close to the waterfalls of Great Falls Park, providing an enriching experience for both cultural enthusiasts and those seeking outdoor recreation.
Here are some of the best places for live performances and outdoor escapes in and around Wolf Trap:
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts: Established in 1966 on land donated by Catherine Filene Shouse, this national park pairs its stages with woodland trails that wind along Wolf Trap Run.
Filene Center: The park’s main outdoor amphitheater holds about 7,000 people under its roof and on the lawn, with a summer season of concerts, musicals, dance, and opera. It was rebuilt after a 1982 fire and reopened in 1984.
The Barns at Wolf Trap: Built from two restored 18th-century barns brought from upstate New York, this 382-seat theater is owned and run by the Wolf Trap Foundation and hosts intimate performances from October to May.
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens: Just west of the national park, this 95-acre NOVA Parks garden features ornamental and native plantings, lakes, and walking paths, and it lights up each holiday season with the Winter Walk of Lights.
Great Falls Park: In this 800-acre national park near McLean, the Potomac River rushes over steep, jagged rocks and into the narrow Mather Gorge, and the remains of the historic Patowmack Canal can still be explored.
Riverbend Park: This Fairfax County park on a bend of the Potomac in Great Falls offers trails, picnic areas, boating, and a visitor center with nature programs throughout the year.
