Sudley, a census-designated place in Prince William County, Virginia, sits just north of the City of Manassas along Sudley Road, a short drive from sites tied to the American Civil War. It shares its name with the old hamlet of Sudley Springs at the northern edge of Manassas National Battlefield Park, where nearly 13,000 Union soldiers crossed Catharpin Creek at Sudley Springs Ford on their way into the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) on July 21, 1861. Within Sudley itself are the Ben Lomond Historic Site and Ben Lomond Regional Park, home to the SplashDown Waterpark. Sudley is part of the broader Manassas area, which takes in Historic Downtown Manassas, the Manassas Museum and Mayfield Fort. Sudley offers a journey into the Civil War’s impact on this part of Virginia, making it an engaging destination for history enthusiasts.
Sudley sits just southeast of Manassas National Battlefield Park and a short drive from Historic Downtown Manassas. Here are some of the best historic sites to visit in and around Sudley:
Manassas National Battlefield Park: Just northwest of Sudley, the fields of the First and Second Battles of Manassas (Bull Run), fought in July 1861 and August 1862, are crossed by more than 40 miles of trails. The Henry Hill Visitor Center is the place to start, with exhibits and an orientation film.
Sudley United Methodist Church: At the northern edge of the battlefield, this active congregation worships on the site of the wartime Sudley Church, which served as a field hospital in both 1861 and 1862. The current church was dedicated in 1922.
Ben Lomond Historic Site: Built in 1832 for Benjamin Tasker Chinn, this house in Sudley became a Confederate hospital after the First Battle of Manassas, and soldiers’ signatures are still visible on its walls. The grounds include an Old Rose Garden with a large collection of antique roses.
Historic Downtown Manassas: A few miles south of Sudley, Old Town Manassas is a historic district of more than 200 historic buildings with shops, restaurants, and a farmers market. Its 1914 train depot houses the visitor center and is still served by VRE and Amtrak trains.
The Manassas Museum: In Historic Downtown Manassas, this city museum covers the history of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, from early settlement and Native American history to the Civil War’s effect on the community. It reopened in 2023 after an extensive renovation.
Mayfield Fort: A few miles southeast in Manassas, this 11-acre city park preserves an 1861 earthwork, the only one left of the eleven fortifications built by the Confederates to guard the railroad at Manassas Junction. It takes its name from the home of the Hooe family, on whose land it was built.
