Tuckahoe, Virginia, is an affluent suburban community in western Henrico County, just west of Richmond, whose western edge follows Tuckahoe Creek along the Goochland County line. While Tuckahoe itself is mainly residential, it is in close proximity to Richmond, a city that boasts a rich tapestry of historical sites and cultural attractions. The community shares its name with Tuckahoe Plantation, an early-18th-century Randolph family estate on the James River where Thomas Jefferson spent part of his boyhood. The estate straddles the Goochland–Henrico line and is privately owned. The area provides a tranquil retreat while being conveniently situated near key landmarks such as the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, offering stunning landscapes. Tuckahoe’s connection to history and its surroundings, including the Virginia State Capitol and Maymont, make it an appealing destination for those seeking a blend of historical depth and contemporary allure in the heart of Virginia.
Tuckahoe sits just minutes from some of the Richmond area’s best-known gardens, museums, and landmarks. Here are some of the top sights in and around Tuckahoe:
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden: About 6 miles east of Tuckahoe in Henrico County’s Lakeside area, the garden spans more than 50 acres with over a dozen themed gardens, a glass Conservatory, and a Children’s Garden.
Agecroft Hall: A Tudor manor house built in Lancashire, England, in the late 15th century, bought at auction in 1925, and shipped to Richmond, where it was reassembled by 1928 in the Windsor Farms neighborhood. The house and its gardens overlook the James River, about 5 miles from Tuckahoe.
Maymont: A 100-acre Gilded Age estate above the James River in Richmond, centered on the Dooley family’s 1893 mansion. The grounds include Japanese and Italian gardens, wildlife habitats with black bears and bison, and the Robins Nature Center.
American Civil War Museum: At its Historic Tredegar site in downtown Richmond, on the grounds of the former Tredegar Iron Works, the museum explores the history of the American Civil War through artifacts and exhibits in a building that opened in 2019.
Virginia State Capitol: Designed by Thomas Jefferson with Charles-Louis Clérisseau and modeled on the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, France, the Capitol was built between 1785 and 1788 and houses the Virginia General Assembly, the oldest elected legislative body in North America.
Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site: In Richmond’s Jackson Ward, this National Park Service site preserves the East Leigh Street home of Maggie L. Walker, the first African American woman to charter a bank in the United States, with a visitor center and house tours.
