Mill Mountain Park: A 568-acre city park beside the Blue Ridge Parkway, crowned by the 88.5-foot Roanoke Star first lit in 1949, with overlooks, more than 15 miles of trails, the Discovery Center and Mill Mountain Zoo.
Carvins Cove Natural Reserve: About 12,700 acres of forest in Roanoke and Botetourt counties around a 630-acre reservoir, with trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding and limited boating and fishing.
Roanoke River Greenway: A paved trail that follows the Roanoke River through the city for more than ten miles, linking parks such as Wasena Park, Smith Park and River’s Edge Park.
Wasena Park: A riverside park on the Roanoke River Greenway with a playground, two ballfields, picnic shelters and a 24,000-square-foot skatepark and pump track that opened in 2026.
