Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Piedmont region, Culpeper exudes historic charm and contemporary allure. Steeped in rich history dating back to colonial times, when the town was established in 1759, Culpeper boasts a well-preserved historic district adorned with 19th- and early 20th-century architecture, housing a myriad of vibrant shops and eateries. The county courthouse and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, the oldest church in town, anchor the downtown, while Civil War history is close at hand at Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain. Beyond its historical tapestry, Culpeper embraces nature with parks like Lenn Park and scenic spots like Lake Culpeper, the town reservoir. This blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes Culpeper a captivating destination in the Virginia countryside.
Culpeper’s downtown, battlefields, and lakes offer plenty to explore. Here are some of the best landmarks and places to visit in and around Culpeper:
Historic Downtown Culpeper: Centered on Davis and Main streets, the downtown historic district is lined with 19th- and early 20th-century buildings that house shops, restaurants, and galleries, along with landmarks such as the 1874 Culpeper County Courthouse and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, built in 1821.
Museum of Culpeper History: Housed in the town’s historic train depot on South Commerce Street, this museum traces Culpeper’s story from the dinosaurs that once roamed the area through Native American, colonial, and Civil War history to modern times.
Culpeper Battlefields State Park: Dedicated in 2024 as Virginia’s 43rd state park, it protects parts of the Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain battlefields, including Fleetwood Hill, where the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War was fought on June 9, 1863. Walking trails with interpretive signs start at Fleetwood Hill and at the Cedar Mountain visitor center.
The Graffiti House: In Brandy Station, about 5 miles northeast of Culpeper, this house served as a field hospital during the Civil War, and its walls still carry charcoal signatures, messages, and drawings left by Union and Confederate soldiers. The Brandy Station Foundation runs it as a visitor center and museum.
Culpeper National Cemetery: Established in 1867 to rebury Union soldiers who died in the area, this national cemetery is still open for veterans’ burials and holds regimental monuments from Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
Lake Culpeper: The town’s 255-acre reservoir, known as Lake Pelham until 2023, is open for fishing and for boating with electric motors only, with largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, and bluegill among the catches.
