Nestled along the banks of the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, Fort Hunt is a quiet residential community with a storied past. It takes its name from Fort Hunt, a coastal fort begun in 1897 to guard the river approach to Washington, D.C.; during World War II the site became a top-secret interrogation center known only by its mailing address, P.O. Box 1142. Today the site is Fort Hunt Park, part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Residents enjoy proximity to notable landmarks such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon and his reconstructed Gristmill and Distillery, providing a glimpse into the nation’s early history. The surrounding natural beauty is showcased in Huntley Meadows Park, with its wetlands and boardwalk, while Woodlawn and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House showcase architectural heritage. Fort Hunt embodies a balance of suburban tranquility, history and access to cultural treasures, making it a distinctive enclave in Northern Virginia.
Fort Hunt’s riverside setting along the George Washington Memorial Parkway puts parkland, trails and several of Virginia’s best-known historic homes within a few miles. Here are some of the best landmarks and sites of interest in and around Fort Hunt:
Fort Hunt Park: This National Park Service park on the George Washington Memorial Parkway has open fields, picnic areas and short walking trails, and visitors can see the exteriors of the old gun batteries from the fort built in the late 1890s.
Mount Vernon Trail: This paved 18-mile path for walkers and cyclists follows the Potomac River between George Washington’s Mount Vernon and Theodore Roosevelt Island, passing right by Fort Hunt Park.
George Washington’s Mount Vernon: A few miles south along the parkway, Washington’s Potomac River estate includes his mansion, gardens, the tomb of George and Martha Washington, and a museum and education center.
George Washington’s Gristmill and Distillery: About three miles west of the Mount Vernon estate, these reconstructions of Washington’s gristmill and whiskey distillery demonstrate 18th-century milling and distilling methods.
Huntley Meadows Park: A short drive west in the Hybla Valley area, this Fairfax County park of about 1,450 acres has a boardwalk across its central wetland and is a favorite spot for bird and wildlife watching.
Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House: On Richmond Highway, Woodlawn is an early-1800s mansion designed by William Thornton, architect of the U.S. Capitol, on land George Washington gave to Nelly Parke Custis and his nephew Lawrence Lewis. Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1940 Pope-Leighey House now stands on the same grounds.
