Nestled on the southeastern tip of the Virginia Peninsula, Hampton is an independent city steeped in history and cultural significance. Known for its maritime heritage, Hampton played a crucial role in the early days of America and claims to be the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in the United States, dating to 1610. The city is home to historic sites like Fort Monroe, a former Army post with a storied past that became a national monument in 2011, and Hampton University, a historically Black university founded in 1868. The Hampton Roads harbor area offers scenic waterfront views and is complemented by attractions such as the Virginia Air & Space Science Center and the Hampton History Museum. With a rich blend of historic landmarks, educational institutions, and cultural offerings, Hampton provides residents and visitors alike with a diverse tapestry of experiences, connecting the past with the present.
Hampton’s attractions reflect four centuries of history, its maritime heritage and its role in flight and space exploration. Here are some of the most notable places to visit in Hampton:
Fort Monroe National Monument: The largest stone fortification ever built in the United States stands at Old Point Comfort, where the first enslaved Africans in English North America arrived in 1619; known as “Freedom’s Fortress,” it became a national monument in 2011.
Hampton University: The historic campus on the Hampton River is home to the Emancipation Oak, where the Emancipation Proclamation was read in 1863, and the Hampton University Museum, founded in 1868.
Virginia Air & Space Science Center: One of the official NASA Visitor Centers, on Settlers Landing Road downtown, with more than 30 historic aircraft, the Apollo 12 Command Module, hands-on space exhibits and an IMAX theater.
Hampton History Museum: A downtown museum on Old Hampton Lane whose ten permanent galleries trace about four centuries of local history, from the Kecoughtan people through the colonial era and the Civil War to the early U.S. space program.
Buckroe Beach: A Chesapeake Bay beach neighborhood just north of Fort Monroe and one of Virginia’s oldest recreation areas, with a fishing pier that was rebuilt after Hurricane Isabel and reopened in 2009.
Hampton Carousel: A restored 1920 carousel with 48 hand-carved horses, saved from the old Buckroe Beach amusement park; it now stands in its own waterfront pavilion downtown and is open seasonally.
