About Colonial Heights, VA
Nestled along the banks of the Appomattox River across from Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Virginia, is an independent city rich in history and contemporary charm. Its name is traced to 1781, when Lafayette’s troops placed artillery on the heights overlooking Petersburg, and during the 1864–1865 siege of Petersburg, Robert E. Lee made his headquarters at Violet Bank. Today the city is a vibrant community offering a blend of historic landmarks and modern amenities. The Violet Bank Museum provides a glimpse into the area’s past, while the Appomattox River Trail and White Bank Park on Swift Creek invite residents and visitors to enjoy the scenic waterfront. Colonial Heights boasts a dynamic shopping scene at Southpark Mall and preserves its historical legacy through sites like Fort Clifton Park. Colonial Heights is a place where history and contemporary life harmoniously coexist, making it a unique destination in Central Virginia.
Colonial Heights packs plenty of history and riverside scenery into a small city. Here are some of the best sights in and around Colonial Heights:
Violet Bank Museum: This 1815 house on Virginia Avenue served as Robert E. Lee’s headquarters from June to September 1864 during the siege of Petersburg. Today it is a city museum covering 1815 to 1873, with period furniture, ceramics, textiles, and Civil War–era artifacts.
Fort Clifton Park: A 24-acre park on the bluffs above the Appomattox River, where earthworks from an 1864 Confederate fort still cross the grounds. It has hiking trails with Civil War signs, a fishing pier, an amphitheater, and picnic areas, and hosts the Fort Clifton Arts and Crafts Festival each May.
Colonial Heights Appomattox River Trail: A hard-surfaced trail of about two miles that follows the Appomattox River from Roslyn Landing Park to the city’s western boundary, with picnic tables, fishing spots, and a small boat launch at Roslyn Landing.
White Bank Park: A 22-acre park on Swift Creek, about half a mile above where the creek joins the Appomattox River, with a boat ramp, a disc golf course, a playground, picnic pavilions, and a volleyball court.
Southpark Mall: The Tri-Cities area’s regional shopping mall, just off I-95 at Exit 54, with dozens of stores, a food court, and a movie theater.
Petersburg National Battlefield: A short drive southeast across the Appomattox River, the park’s Eastern Front unit off Route 36 has a visitor center with exhibits and a film about the 1864–1865 siege, plus a tour road that passes Fort Stedman and the Crater.
