Nestled along the banks of the Potomac River, Foggy Bottom stands as a historic and distinctive neighborhood in the heart of Washington, D.C. Known for its proximity to the political and cultural epicenter of the city, Foggy Bottom is home to institutions such as George Washington University and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The origin of the neighborhood’s name is uncertain; it may refer to the low, marshy land by the river or to fog mixed with smoke from the factories that once lined the Potomac. Today, Foggy Bottom is characterized by a mix of stately townhouses, modern apartment buildings, and prominent government offices, including the headquarters of the State Department. The Watergate complex, with its historic and political significance, adds to the neighborhood’s allure. With the nearby scenic views along the Potomac River and easy access to the National Mall, Foggy Bottom embodies a unique blend of academic, cultural, and political influences within the dynamic landscape of the nation’s capital.
Foggy Bottom sits between the White House, Georgetown and the Potomac, within walking distance of several of the city’s best-known parks and memorials. Here are some of the best parks and landmarks in and around Foggy Bottom:
The Watergate: This curving riverside complex of apartments, offices and a hotel, built between 1963 and 1971, gave its name to the scandal that followed the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee’s offices.
Rock Creek Park Trail: Starting near the Lincoln Memorial, this paved trail follows the Potomac and Rock Creek past Foggy Bottom and continues north toward the National Zoo and the woods of Rock Creek Park.
Lincoln Memorial: A short walk south of Foggy Bottom, the memorial’s chamber holds Daniel Chester French’s statue of Abraham Lincoln, carved from 28 pieces of Georgia marble.
Constitution Gardens: A quiet corner of the National Mall with a pond and a small island that holds the memorial to the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Theodore Roosevelt Island: A wooded island in the Potomac near the Key Bridge, with trails through forest and marsh and a memorial plaza with a bronze statue of the 26th president; it is reached by a footbridge from the Virginia side.
Georgetown Waterfront Park: Just west in Georgetown, this riverside park completed in 2011 stretches from 31st Street NW to the Key Bridge, with a seasonal fountain, a labyrinth and river steps facing the Potomac.
