Petersburg’s landmarks tell the story of the Civil War siege, one of its earliest African American neighborhoods and its colonial past. Here are some of the best historic sites in and around Petersburg:
Petersburg National Battlefield: This park preserves the sites of the nine-and-a-half-month Siege of Petersburg, with the Eastern Front Visitor Center, Grant’s Headquarters at City Point and the Five Forks Battlefield among its units.
Old Blandford Church: Petersburg’s oldest building, constructed between 1734 and 1737, is known for its stained-glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and is surrounded by the historic Blandford Cemetery.
Centre Hill Museum: A mansion completed in 1823 for Petersburg businessman Robert Bolling, now a city-owned museum at the heart of the Centre Hill Historic District.
Pocahontas Island Historic District: This neighborhood on a peninsula on the north side of the Appomattox River is one of Petersburg’s earliest predominantly African American communities and has ties to the Underground Railroad.
Battersea: Built in 1768 for John Banister, who later signed the Articles of Confederation, this five-part Palladian villa is now being restored by the Battersea Foundation, which opens it for tours and events.
