Mechanicsville, Virginia, is a growing suburban community in Hanover County, just northeast of Richmond. A census-designated place of nearly 40,000 residents, it lies north of the Chickahominy River along U.S. Route 360 and Interstate 295, less than two miles from Richmond’s city limits at its closest point. The area is steeped in Civil War history: the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek, also known as the Battle of Mechanicsville, was fought here in June 1862 as part of the Seven Days Battles, and the Battle of Cold Harbor followed nearby in 1864. Parts of both battlefields are preserved in Richmond National Battlefield Park, along with the historic Rural Plains house, and Cold Harbor National Cemetery lies on the Cold Harbor battlefield. A decorative stone windmill in downtown Mechanicsville is a local landmark. With easy access to Richmond, Mechanicsville offers a comfortable blend of suburban living and history.
