Grant’s Headquarters at City Point: Part of Petersburg National Battlefield, this site between the Appomattox and James rivers preserves Appomattox Manor, the Eppes family home, and the cabin General Ulysses S. Grant used as headquarters during the 1864–65 Siege of Petersburg.
City Point National Cemetery: Established in 1866 and run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this national cemetery holds thousands of Civil War soldiers and later veterans and features a marble monument to the Army of the James.
Weston Manor: A Georgian plantation house on the Appomattox River, probably built in the 1780s for the Gilliam family. Run by the Historic Hopewell Foundation, it preserves much of its original woodwork and offers guided tours.
Beacon Theatre: Opened in 1928 as the Broadway Theatre and restored by the city, this downtown landmark reopened as a live performance venue in 2014 and hosts concerts and other shows throughout the year.
Hopewell Riverwalk: A 1,700-foot boardwalk along the Appomattox River at City Park, with two overlooks facing the meeting of the James and Appomattox rivers and historic City Point. Bald eagles, ospreys and herons are often seen from it.
Petersburg National Battlefield: A short drive west in Petersburg, the park’s Eastern Front Visitor Center has a museum and film, and a four-mile tour road leads to the Fort Stedman and Crater battlefields of the 1864–65 siege.
