White Plains, Maryland, is an unincorporated community in Charles County, just south of Waldorf, that blends quiet residential neighborhoods with easy access to everyday amenities. Its commercial strip runs along U.S. Route 301, and the area is home to the headquarters of the Charles County Department of Health as well as newer office parks. White Plains Regional Park, with its public golf course, is the community’s recreational centerpiece, the paved Indian Head Rail Trail starts here, and Cedarville State Forest is a short drive north. With La Plata, the county seat, just down Route 301 to the south and Waldorf’s shops and restaurants to the north, White Plains keeps a friendly community atmosphere with convenient access to the broader attractions of Charles County.
White Plains sits between Waldorf and La Plata, putting a regional park, a long rail trail, a state forest and historic sites within easy reach. Here are some of the best parks and sights in and around White Plains:
White Plains Regional Park: The community’s main county park, on St. Charles Parkway, has a public 18-hole golf course, a skatepark, a dog park, tennis courts, athletic fields and a playground.
Indian Head Rail Trail: This paved path starts on Theodore Green Boulevard in White Plains and runs about 13 miles west to Indian Head along a former Navy rail line, passing forests, farmland and the wetlands of Mattawoman Creek.
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs: Just north in Waldorf, the Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball play their home games at the county-owned ballpark on St. Linus Drive.
Cedarville State Forest: A short drive north near Brandywine, this 3,510-acre state forest at the headwaters of Zekiah Swamp has trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, a fishing pond and a campground.
Gilbert Run Park: About 8 miles east of La Plata on Route 6, this Charles County park is set around Wheatley Lake, which is used for fishing and boating, and has a wooded trail of about two miles around the lake.
Thomas Stone National Historic Site: Near Port Tobacco, west of La Plata, the National Park Service preserves Haberdeventure, the home of Declaration of Independence signer Thomas Stone, along with the family cemetery and nature trails.
