Laurel grew up as a mill town on the Patuxent River, and its historic Main Street and surrounding parks are easy to explore. Here are some of the top sights in and around Laurel:
Patuxent Research Refuge: Established in 1936 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, this wildlife refuge of about 13,000 acres has the National Wildlife Visitor Center, walking trails and two lakes on its South Tract.
Montpelier Mansion: A five-part Georgian house built between about 1781 and 1785 by Major Thomas Snowden just south of Laurel, visited by George Washington in 1787 and now a National Historic Landmark and house museum.
Laurel Museum: Run by the Laurel Historical Society at 817 Main Street, in a renovated 1840s mill workers’ home, with exhibits on the city’s history.
Main Street: The heart of the old mill town, down which cotton cloth from the Laurel mill was once shipped to the railroad, protected by a city historic district since 1975 and lined with local shops and restaurants.
