Renting a Supercar in DC: What First-Timers Should Know

Renting a supercar or exotic car for the first time? Whether it's for a birthday, a wedding weekend, or a drive you've wanted to take for years, Supercars By The Day is here to help across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. This guide walks you through each stage, so you'll know what to expect and what to ask.
How renting a supercar works
Insurance, deposits, and a car you've never driven can feel like a lot the first time. It's completely normal to have questions, and you won't be figuring it out alone.
There's no such thing as a silly question. Call us at (240) 244-9206, whether it's your first rental or your fifth. Asking questions or requesting a quote doesn't commit you to booking.
1. Choose a car for your plans
Start with what can't change: how many people are coming, how many bags you'll bring, your dates, and your budget. Use those to narrow down our vehicle collection, then choose by style, roof type, and feel.
A few things first-time renters often miss:
- Count the driver. A listing's seat count includes the driver.
- Check seats and bags together. Luggage space shrinks when every seat is in use, so tell us about bulky items like golf bags or strollers.
- Look closely at rear seats. A small rear seat may not suit adults or child car seats.
- Think about where you're going. Low supercars need care on steep driveways, ramps, and speed bumps, so check your garage, hotel, or venue entrance.
A two-seat supercar suits a day behind the wheel, while a Rolls-Royce or luxury SUV suits passengers or a special arrival. Equipment varies by car and model year, so ask about the specific car. Renting an electric car? Ask about the charge level at pickup and at return.
Not sure which fits? Tell us your plans and we'll suggest a few options.
Planning a photo shoot, an event, or decorations? Let us know early. Nothing can be attached to the car without our approval, and photographers are arranged separately.
2. Get availability and a full quote
Share your dates and exact pickup and return times. A rental "day" isn't always 24 hours, so confirm your times with us. Planning a long drive? Tell us roughly where you're headed so your quote includes enough miles.
Each car's listing shows its deposit, included miles, and extra-mile rate, which makes it easier to compare. Then ask us for a written quote covering:
- Rental price, taxes, and delivery charges.
- How many miles are included and the charge for extra miles.
- Fuel or charging requirements for the return.
- The security deposit, cancellation terms, and any multi-day offer.
Compare the full cost, not just the daily rate. The deposit is separate from the rental price, and your responsibility for damage can exceed it.
A car shown online isn't reserved until we confirm it, so wait for confirmation before making other plans.
3. Get approved before pickup
Once you've booked, upload each driver's license and insurance card through our customer portal, a secure page on our website, for our team to review. Trouble uploading? Give us a call.
Everyone who will drive must be approved and named on the rental agreement, so add extra drivers now rather than on the day. Paying online doesn't complete approval, and you'll sign the rental agreement before you get the keys.
Ask your insurer whether your policy covers every approved driver, what your deductible is, and whether it pays for loss of use, meaning the rental income lost while a damaged car is off the road. If your policy doesn't cover a car like this, tell us, and we can help you look into extra coverage.
Driving on a license from outside the US? Ask us before booking which licenses we accept. If you have an SR-22 (a form some states require after certain driving violations), tell us before paying so we can confirm your eligibility.
4. Choose pickup or delivery
Pickup from our headquarters at 5701 Wicomico Ave, Rockville, MD 20852, is free. We also deliver to homes, hotels, venues, and airports across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, including Dulles, BWI, and Reagan National, with fees based on distance. Select cars can be delivered nationwide.
Confirm the location, time, and fee in writing, and be ready at the agreed time, as waiting charges can apply.
Flying into Dulles? Our Ferrari and Lamborghini airport guides explain how we coordinate pickup around your flight.
5. Take your time at handover
Before you drive away, we'll walk around the car with you. This is your chance to learn the car and agree on its condition. First time in a car like this? Tell us, and we'll start with the basics. It's fine to ask us to show you something twice.
Questions worth asking:
- How do I adjust the seat and mirrors?
- How do I start the car, select gears, and change driving modes?
- What do the warning lights and alerts mean?
- Which cameras, sensors, and safety features are fitted?
- Is there a nose lift to raise the front over speed bumps?
- On a convertible, how does the roof work?
Before setting off, photograph the car from every side, plus the fuel gauge and mileage. Make sure existing damage, warning lights, or tire concerns are noted in the paperwork, and save our number in your phone.
6. Enjoy the drive responsibly
Take a few minutes on quieter roads to get used to the car before joining busy traffic. Supercars respond quickly, and the view out may feel unfamiliar. There's no need to use every bit of power to enjoy the day.
- Keep within the agreed mileage and driving area, and follow posted speed limits.
- Cameras and assistance features help, but keep looking around and stay alert.
- Racing, track use, and off-road driving aren't allowed, even in an SUV.
- Smoking and pets need our written agreement.
7. Know what to do if something goes wrong
It helps to know these steps in advance, just in case. If there's an accident or damage:
- Stop safely, check whether anyone is hurt, and call 911 if needed. Don't drive a car that seems unsafe.
- When it's safe, photograph the scene and the damage, and collect contact details from anyone involved.
- Call Supercars By The Day as soon as possible, and we'll talk you through what happens next.
- Tell your insurer, and get approval before arranging repairs or towing.
If a warning light comes on, contact us rather than driving on.
8. Return the car without the rush
Leave extra time on your last leg for traffic and a fuel stop, so the end of your day stays relaxed. Use the fuel type we specify, and return the car at the agreed time and place with the agreed fuel or charge level.
Before handing back the keys, ask us to help disconnect your phone and clear your data, rather than resetting settings yourself. Check the car over with our team and keep a copy of the return inspection.
If anything is taken off your deposit, ask for a written breakdown. Road tolls can arrive a few days after the rental ends.
What to confirm before booking
The essentials for driving one of our cars yourself:
- Drivers: each driver must be at least 18, hold a valid driver's license, and have insurance approved for the car. Everyone who drives must be named on the rental agreement and approved by our team before pickup.
- Deposit: the amount varies by car and is shown on each listing. It's separate from the rental price and isn't paid by credit card.
- Cancellation: cancellations receive credit toward a future rental, valid for one year. Where possible, let us know at least 48 hours before your rental starts.
For insurance, mileage, delivery, and other common questions, see our FAQ, or just ask us.
