Travilah, Maryland, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Montgomery County, lying along the north bank of the Potomac River between Potomac, North Potomac, Darnestown and Rockville. Named after Travilah Clagett, its first postmaster, Travilah is an affluent residential community known for large homes on generous lots, quiet country roads and an unusual amount of protected parkland, from stream valley parks to the C&O Canal towpath. Although parts of it still feel rural, Travilah sits close to the I-270 Technology Corridor and the city of Rockville, with Bethesda and Washington, D.C. within easy reach. This location gives residents a peaceful retreat from the city while keeping shopping centers, dining and cultural attractions a short drive away, combining the calm of country living with the convenience of Montgomery County.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park: The historic canal towpath runs along Travilah’s Potomac River edge, with parking areas at Swains Lock and Pennyfield Lock for walking and cycling. Pennyfield Lock also has a canoe and kayak launch.
Great Falls Tavern: A short drive downstream in Potomac, this C&O Canal site at Lock 20 leads to the Olmsted Island boardwalk and its views of the Great Falls of the Potomac, and it is close to the popular Billy Goat Trail.
Glenstone: On Glen Road in Potomac, near the old Travilah crossroads, this contemporary art museum shows art made since World War II in modern galleries and as outdoor sculpture across a 230-acre wooded campus.
Muddy Branch Stream Valley Park: Following the stream that forms Travilah’s western edge, this park carries the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail, about 9 miles of natural-surface trail for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders, with a bridge across to Pennyfield Lock and the C&O Canal.
Blockhouse Point Conservation Park: On River Road where the Muddy Branch nears the Potomac, this park of about 630 acres is named for a Civil War site and offers wooded trails with views of the Potomac River and the C&O Canal.
